The Origin of Canon EOS Digital Cameras
EOS stands for Electro Optical System, which means an optical system having an electronic circuit. Canon first introduced the EOS film cameras in March 1987 with the launch of the EOS 650 with the ability to auto focus. EOS cameras have an EF mount, so lens designed specifically for Canon EF mount with the name of Canon EF lenses, and all this must be compatible EF lenses with EOS cameras.
EOS Digital Camera is the first of Canon EOS DSC 3 with 1.3 MP CCD sensor (in collaboration with Kodak) and an important stage in manufacturing the current Canon EOS could eventually produce their own EOS cameras with the launch of the EOS D30 in 2000 with a resolution of 3 MP CMOS sensor . As a processor of the EOS Digital, is used DIGIC processor with a name which has now reached the fourth generation.
Canon FD mount before 1987 had only suitable for Canon FD lenses. FD lenses (see example above) can only manual focus and lens FD can not be mounted on EOS mount because of different shapes and sizes. This is different to the Nikon system whereby all Nikon lenses since ancient times can still be installed on the latest Nikon digital SLR.

Canon EF and EF-S lenses
EF lenses (electrofocus) are artificial lenses that have Canon EF mount, so must be compatible with EOS cameras. EF lenses now has many variants of both types of prime (fixed) or zoom. EF-S lenses have a diameter image circle is smaller than EF lenses, designed specifically for DSLR with APS-C sensor so that the EF-S lenses can not be used for the EOS 35mm film camera. As for the lens EF and EF-S mount basically have the same shape and also contacts the same electronics, so EOS Digital cameras with APS-C sensor can be fitted with EF lenses (not EF-S lenses). But EF-S lenses are not properly mounted on the EOS Digital camera with a sensor larger than APS-C sensor because although it can be used but will produce a black circle on the edge of the image (vignetting) for EF-S lens diameter is smaller.
The letter ‘S’ on the code itself EF-S stands for Short (back focus), mean EF-S lenses have a much closer distance between the lens with the sensor.
Now available in the market and also a lot of EF lenses EF-S. If you plan to have a DSLR EOS with full frame sensor like the EOS 5D Mark II, then seek only EF lenses only. But if you feel quite satisfied with EOS DSLR APS-C sensor like the EOS 550D, EOS 60D or EOS 7D, the EF-S lenses can be an option.
Canon EOS Camera Auto Focus System
In principle, auto focus (AF) on EOS cameras use the AF motor in the lens, in other words all Canon EF lenses have AF motor in it. This is different to that has motorcycle Nikon AF on the camera body (although not all have a Nikon digital SLR AF motor), in other words not all Nikon lenses have AF motor. However, Canon did not treat each with the same lens, which lens provided cheap and expensive lens AF motors of different types and quality.
There are two types of motors in Canon lenses, namely:
* Motor AFD (arc-form drive) or micromotor drives -> for cheap lenses
* Motor USM (ultrasonic motor) -> for expensive lenses
AFD motor is a conventional micro motor and cheap. It poses a rotating magnetic coil when energized electrical voltage. Motor is quiet noisy when spinning and the speed was mediocre. Note that the lens Canon EF / EF-S is not labeled USM motor in it means taking the AFD system (confused with Nikon AF-S lenses that must have been wearing motorcycle SWM).
USM is a new tekolonogi motor that drives the motor with a wave that provides higher speed but with a more refined sound. But again, dividing the Canon USM lenses with this technology into two groups, namely USM lens for expensive and USM lens for an ordinary lens.
The two types of motor USM in Canon lenses, namely:
* Based USM lens ring for expensive (see example image above)
* Based USM micromotor for a cheaper lens
Differences exist both in the working principles and the ability of instant manual focus (FTM: full-time manual). In ring-based USM lens, we can simply turn the manual focus ring anytime we want. So switching from auto focus to manual focus can be done directly without moving the lever AF to MF. When using a non USM lens or lens cheap USM (with micromotor), we have to move the lever just play AF to MF manual focus ring.
Lens with USM or not the code will not affect the optical quality, because only signifies USM AF motor system alone. If you are in everyday life often taking a moving object, or a sporting event and need the fastest performance of the system Canon AF lenses, then choose the lens with USM technology in it.
Mode Dial Typical Canon Cameras
Canon EOS Digital has a mode dial that is not much different from most other DSLR cameras. There is an Auto mode, five creative modes and several presets for specific conditions (basic zone or scene mode). Overview explanation of the creative modes, namely:
* P (Program): like the Auto mode but we can go from some combination of aperture and shutter are possible
* Tv (Shutter Priority): the camera determines the best settings, while we determine what shutter speed to be used
* Av (Aperture Priority): the opposite of Tv, we determine the diaphragm aperture while the camera set the shutter speed corresponding
* M (Manual): shutter and aperture control will be purely on us as consumers
* A-DEP (Depth of Field / DoF Preview): the camera will use the smallest aperture (stop down) for DoF preview (as it reduces light entering the display in the viewfinder would be a bit dark).
Canon EOS has a flash system with the latest E-TTL (Electronic Through-The-Lens). E-TTL itself is a light measurement process (metering) through the lens so that it can be determined how the intensity of the flash is best for each shooting conditions. This will avoid the images that are too dark or too light when using the flash, both wearing light when photographing the built-in or external.
Canon E-TTL algorithm carried out in succession, namely:
1. When the shutter button is pressed half, the auto focus and metering (measuring the ambient light) is done.
2. Pre-flash lamp is lit, the reflections are again measured by the camera.
3. From there the camera to calculate and compare the two results of previous measurements.
4. When the button is fully pressed, the mirror up, shutter open and the lights flash.
5. Shutter re-closing, mirror back down and the images appear on the LCD screen.
For an external flash, Canon is also using technology high speed sync (FP mode) and wireless modes. FP mode allows the use of an external flash with shutter speeds above the maximum sync speed cameras, with the way the lights will remain lit at intervals of 50 kHz during the shutter open.
